Tempo fa, quando il patron di Mnamon Editore, Gilberto Salvi, mi chiese una relazione su una passata edizione della Biennale di Venezia, notai come il problema del moderno, assolutamente fondamentale,  fosse visto in maniera addirittura opposta a seconda della geografia, e quindi, conseguentemente, anche della storia. Anche se allora si trattava di una Biennale di architettura, il problema si ripropone oggi in tutta la sua rilevanza fin dal titolo della Biennale 2019. e cioè May you live in interesting times, e che si possa o no vivere in tempi interessanti è dato da come si vive il moderno.

Riassumo brevemente la questione presentata allora: presi come esempio delle due opposte visioni il Brasile e la Lettonia, e quello che  portarono nei rispettivi padiglioni. Mentre il Brasile era assolutamente in favore del moderno, addirittura entusiasta fin nella bandiera, che in italiano suona come ordine e progresso, la Lettonia vedeva nel moderno un incubo spaventoso, sinonimo di totalitarismo, genocidio e Gulag, e ambedue le visioni del moderno si sono avverate, dicevano gli espositori, nell’architettura e in ogni tipo di arte ufficiale.

Ora, ammesso che Greta Thunberg riesca a farcela e possa esistere un futuro per l’umanità, quale delle due opinioni del moderno prevarrà, negli eventuali libri del futuro? A suo modo, anche la Biennale 2019 risponde a questa domanda. Nell’impossibilità di analizzare l’intera manifestazione, verranno dati alcuni esempi, sia di padiglioni nazionali, sia di singoli artisti che non si rispecchiano in una nazione,  sperando di riuscire a dare un’idea, appunto,  dei Tempi del titolo.
